Update: CC Salon SF venue announced
We’re delighted to announce that the next CC Salon SF (Wednesday, February 11, from 7-9pm) will be held at PariSoMa, located at 1436 Howard Street, San Francisco (map and directions). We extend our sincerest thanks to the generous folks at PariSoMa for offering up their lovely space! We hope you’ll join us in making our first evening in these new surroundings a warm and lively one. Light refreshments will be served.
We’ll have the entire CC staff under one roof, and the evening’s program includes brief presentations from:

For February’s salon, we’re thrilled to have the entire CC staff under one roof, coming from as far as Los Angeles, Dubai, Boston, and Berlin, and as near as SF’s SOMA district, to speak about what they’ve been up to internationally and in the realms of science, culture, and education. No Comments »CC Salon SF is looking for a new home
Do you or someone you know have a free space in San Francisco that CC could take over for a few hours in the evening once every two months? It could be anything from a bookstore back room to a gallery to a roomy office space – so long as it can comfortably accommodate up to 40 or 50 people and is conducive to discussion and presentations (A/V and mic setup are necessary; internet access is ideal).
The Creative Commons Salon allows us to put a face on CC and to build a community around the shared ideals of free and participatory culture, so if you’re excited about helping this movement grow, please consider showing some love by tapping into your network of contacts, friends, and colleagues to see if anyone might be willing to support CC by offering up space for our salon.
We’re also considering hosting salons once a year in the East Bay and the South Bay, so let us know if you’d be interested in attending or if you know of an available space.

No Comments »Announcing December’s CC Salon NYC / 6th Birthday Party
UPDATE: We’ve officially too big for TOPP, so we’re moving the Salon to the For Your Imagination Loft. Details below.
Creative Commons turns 6 in mid-December, and we’ll be celebrating Salon style (as has been the tradition in NYC for CC’s birthdays in years past) at The Open Planning Project once again For Your Imagination on December 16th with a Salon and free beer. Since its our birthday there will be some special birthday surprises as well.
December’s Salon will feature presentations by Michael Galpert from Aviary.com (who was unable to make it to September’s Salon but is joining us this time), LimeBits’ Jonathan Marshall & Ted Metcalfe, Spot from the Electric Sheep CC-licensed screen saver, and a special musical performance from Sarah Elizabeth Foster, whose new CD is CC licensed.

To the Bay Area CC community: we hope you can make it to our next CC Salon SF this Wednesday, from 7-9 pm. The theme is “CC and Citizen Journalism,” and we’re very excited about the presenters we’ve got lined up:
From Wikinews: Volunteer Coordinator Cary Bass and Bay Area “Wikinewsie” volunteer Jon Davis will talk about their experience at Wikinews, a global citizen journalism effort and project of the Wikimedia Foundation.
From Spot.us: David Cohn, who has been involved with myriad citizen journalism projects, the likes of which include NewAssignment.net and his current endeavor, Spot.us – a crowdfunding journalism project of the nonprofit Center for Media Change.
Music for the evening will be provided by DJ qubitsu.

Last night, we hosted another edition of our CC Salon series in Los Angeles. Dublab‘s Mark McNeill and Ale Cohen discussed their endeavors in Web radio, art, and film – as well as Into Infinity, the art and music exhibition they’re producing in collaboration with Creative Commons. Lucas Gonze gave a presentation about the economics of online music, which developed into an extended audience conversation about media business models and self-distribution. The night was a great success, with some of the most thoughtful interaction we’ve seen come out of these events. Thanks to the presenters, all of the attendees, and to Jonny Coleman of Found Gallery, who has graciously let us use his space for CC Salon LA for the past year.

A reminder that TONIGHT CC Salon LA returns with a fantastic combination of presenters – joining us will be web radio collective Dublab and Lucas Gonze, net-label theorist and XSPF developer.
Both presentations will discuss how CC, and ‘openness’ in general, is affecting web radio and net labels, both from an economic and artistic vantage, with a Q&A to follow each. Additionally, Dublab will ask salon attendees to create noise – both as a group and as individuals – which will be recorded and turned into audio loops that will be used for the Into Infinity project, a new art exhibition produced in collaboration with Creative Commons.
The Salon will be taking place at the always wonderful FOUND Gallery (Google map) between 7:30PM – 9:30PM. Follow the event on Upcoming, mark attending on Facebook, and make sure to come down and hear from two exemplary members of the CC community on their experiences with open licensing. As always, there will be free (as in beer) drinks for the entire night.
No Comments »CC Salons: Denver/Boulder and Starting Your Own
We recently caught wind of some inspiring news – unbeknown to us, a very active CC Salon has been happening in the Boulder/Denver CO area through Slice of Lime, a design and development firm. They are on their 8th installment, an impressive feat we haven’t even matched ourselves in certain locations. If you live in the area, be sure to check them out next month on 11/19 for discussions of CC over “beer, chips, and cupcakes.”
It seems a good time then to feature our recently revamped Salon wiki page. Borrowing heavily from our good friends at dorkbot, we are hoping to make the process for starting CC Salons in your area (if one doesn’t already exist) simple and straight forward. Simiarly, we hope that we can explain realistically what making a successful Salon entails.
More than anything, a successful Salon boils down to the interests of your specific geographical community – each city and area has its own identity and it is important to approach the Salon format from that perspective. What issues are important to you and the people in your area, and how does CC relate?The Salons are meant to address the belief that, while CC exists primarily as a digital tool, it is nothing without the actual people who use it.
The Salons are a great way to meet people who are using CC and open tools, and remains one of our best methods to help people understand exactly what CC does and how they can use it in their own lives. Check out Salon page for details on cities that have featured Salons, both currently and in the past – we currently curate Salons in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York City but there are a slew of other cities that have shown active interest in the past.

We proudly announce the first CC Salon to be held in the Alps in the net
culture labs of the cities Vienna and Dornbirn simultaneously, connected with
a video bridge.CC licensing has become very popular in Austria and even found its way in
curricula of media design students. Together with the Austrian Chamber of
Commerce, the creative sector association just published 10.000 booklets,
explaining the pitfalls of the copyright in daily creative work, and
suggesting CC as a preferred licensing model.We would like to welcome guests from surrounded areas. Any other city in the
alps is invited to follow up with a next salon event.
The CC Alps Salon will take place today, October 23, at 1930 CET.
