CC in Flickr Advanced Search!

Mike Linksvayer, May 16th, 2006

Flickr rolled out a bunch of new features today, among them adding a Creative Commons-specific search to the Flickr advanced search page, fulfilling a new year’s resolution.

Now you can search the approximately 12.7 million CC-licensed photos on Flickr across all CC licenses or only those that allow commercial use or derivative works, just as you can search the web at Yahoo! advanced search.

Way to go Flickr!

Toronto and Berlin CC Salons

Mike Linksvayer, May 11th, 2006

Last night’s CC Salon San Francisco was probably the best so far, with just the right mix of art, legal, and technology mixed in the three excellent presentations. If you’re involved in U.S. politics, or make art that critiques U.S. politics, you must check out Metavid, the first presenters — keyword searchable public domain footage from the U.S. Congress in high quality open format with cool remediator applications coming. Special thanks to the large contingent from the EFF in attendance, source of the evening’s most provocative questions.

Coming up May 16 there will be a CC Salon in Toronto and the 29th in Berlin. The next San Francisco Salon is June 14.

Info on starting your own salon.

Jamendo 1k

Mike Linksvayer, May 11th, 2006

Jamendo recently passed the 1,000 album mark, more than doubling since the beginning of the year.

Congratulations! Jamendo is a great place to find CC licensed music. See their top albums by popularity and a search form on the side of that page that allows you to only see albums that match your licensing needs (commercial use, derivative works), just like Yahoo! and Google web searches for CC.

ccPublisher 2 beta 3 Now Available

Nathan Yergler, May 11th, 2006

We’ve been working hard on ccPublisher 2 lately, and I’m pleased to announce that the third beta is available for download. You can find release notes and downloads for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux here. This release is stable enough for regular use. If you’ve tried ccPublisher in the past and want to upload a work to the Internet Archive, I encourage you to try this release. We’re still working on ironing out the last few wrinkles, but overall this release is more stable and flexible than previous ones.

ccPublisher 2 doesn’t add lots of new features to the original ccPublisher feature set, instead opting to focus on the infrastructure of the application. I think it’s a strategy that’s paying off, and will make the addition of new features far easier in the future. We’re already seeing results, as bugs and major improvements to the code base are far easier than they were with ccPublisher 1.

If you have any suggestions, ideas, or bug reports, we’d love to hear them. You can file bugs in the ccPublisher tracker, or join the cc-devel mailing list to communicate with the developers.

Cinema 2.0?

Mike Linksvayer, May 10th, 2006

A Swarm of Angels is a project to create a fan-funded sci-fi thriller with funders participating in every step of the movie making process. The project is unsing the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.5 license.

Some interesting talent has already signed on with the project, including most recently The Kleptones as soundtrack producers.

You can be one of the first 1000 angels.

“A new way to create cult media.”

“Active entertainment.”

“Be part of a giant media experiment.”

Free ‘Screen’ Culture – Melbourne, May 17, 2006

Mia Garlick, May 10th, 2006

If you’re in Melbourne or will be next Wednesday, check out the Free ‘Screen’ Culture forum which is taking place as part of Arts Law Week. Open Channel is hosting the forum which will feature 7 panelists debating “Creative Commons – new technologies and licensing for the screen.” There will also be a live video and sound remix by Dale Nason and Steve Law.

Panelists will include Philippa Campey from Film Camp, Dale Nason from Cinematic Dispersion, Nic Suzor from Creative Commons Australia, Frank Rodi from the Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) and Andrew Garton from Open Channel. Given APRA advises it’s members that Creative Commons licensing is confusing and should be approached with caution, the forum should prove to be very interesting and reflect a diversity of views.

Details: May 17, 7 – 9pm at Cinema Nova, 380 Lygon St, Carlton, AUD5 entry fee (free for OPEN CHANNEL Members) at the door.
