Climate change, and the resulting harm to our global biodiversity, has been one of the world’s most pressing challenges for decades. Creative Commons (CC) and its partners SPARC and EIFL are launching a global campaign to develop and deliver on equitable, effective messaging, strategies and tactics to empower stakeholders currently leading critical climate and biodiversity work to embed open practices and policies in their operations, and make open sharing of climate and biodiversity research the default.
CC is looking for an enthusiastic, well-organized and hardworking Campaign Manager to assist Creative Commons, our partners, and the campaign steering committee in devising, planning and creating materials for a 4-year global campaign to open climate change and biodiversity research; and then organizing, coordinating, and delivering on that detailed campaign plan.
- Create a detailed 4-year plan for a global campaign to open climate change and biodiversity research.
- Collect and use results from past open access research, climate and biodiversity campaigns to inform our campaign design and strategy.
- Meet with project partners, the steering committee and other stakeholders to get input and feedback on campaign plan details.
- Build project plans, schedules, and budgets for each campaign objective.
- Design, develop and revise campaign materials and communications with stakeholders.
- Write, edit and proofread copy for all campaign, public announcement and communications materials.
- Oversee the design of the campaign website and keep the content updated.
- Implement, maintain and monitor project plans, project schedules, and budgets for each objective. Undertake project tasks as required.
- Assess campaign risks and propose changes to the campaign plan as needed.
- Manage and communicate ongoing changes in tasks, goals and performance.
- Prepare necessary presentation materials for meetings.
- Chair and facilitate campaign meetings and distribute minutes to all campaign team members.
- Document and follow up on important actions and decisions from meetings.
- Facilitate communications with the steering committee.
- Coordinate approximately 10 team members to keep workflow on track.
- Ensure project deadlines are met.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Education and Experience
- Background in science, open access research, government relations, publishing or related field of study.
- No specific degree is required, but a bachelor’s and/or master’s degree or equivalent level of coursework, training, or on-the-job experience is preferred.
- 5+ year track record planning and overseeing successful public campaigns, including experience:
- in leading and managing projects and teams;
- communicating with diverse stakeholders, including individuals, organizations, and/or governments;
- with following a campaign plan and reporting; and
- with open licenses, open access research and/or open science (bonus).
- Communication experience including developing messaging, identifying key audiences, creating a strategy and successful implementation.
Qualities and Abilities
- Ability to persuade a non-marketing audience, such as senior level managers within an organisation, of the wisdom of proposed campaigns.
- Excellent project management including time management and work organization skills.
- Ability to navigate politically sensitive issues.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and presentation effectiveness.
- Social media knowledge and skills.
- Excellent analytical and problem solving abilities.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a dynamic environment with a high degree of flexibility.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Proficient technology skills (Google suite, Asana, Slack, knowledge of WordPress a plus).
- Skilled at documentation management, project management and campaign design tools.
- Demonstrated excellence in independent management of complex projects.
- Time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines.
- Experience in grant writing and grant management is a plus.
- Fluent in English; second language competency a plus.
- Experience in working in international teams is a plus.

Work Environment and Location
Creative Commons is a fully-distributed organization with no central office. This position is in a remote working environment. This position reports to a manager in US Pacific time. You will need to be available for weekly meetings with partners in the US and Europe. You must have reasonable mobility for necessary travel (when travel is permitted), and high-speed broadband access.
Creative Commons is a leading non-profit employer, offering competitive salaries and a positive, supportive work environment. We offer a competitive compensation for this contractor position at $7,500 – $10,000 per month, commensurate with experience, relevant skills, and location. This is a grant funded position for 7 months. Further funding to support the full four-year campaign is being requested.
