CC’s 6th Birthday in NYC & Salon Followup

Fred Benenson, December 17th, 2008

Thanks to everyone who made it out to the FYI studio for our 6th Birthday last night in NYC. Despite battling the first snow storm of the season, the crowd enjoyed presentations from Ted & Jonathan of Limebits, Michael from Aviary, Spot of Electric Sheep and an fantastic performance by Sarah Elizabeth Foster.

Happy Birthday may or may not have been sung, and many free beers were consumed. Check out Ben Sisto’s free photos of the evening if you want to see more proof.

Special thanks goes to everyone who helped setup and break down, and especially to For Your Imagination for supplying their awesome studio space in the face of a intimidating RSVP list.

Most importantly, please take a minute to fill out our quick survey so we can solicit feedback about our Salons. You can also use the survey to give us your e-mail address so we can let you know about future events.

Aviary’s Remix Community

Fred Benenson, November 10th, 2008

Aviary‘s mission is to “make the world’s creation accessible.” So it makes sense that they’ve baked Creative Commons licensing into their platform of live image editing applications. The site has launched with three distinct tools (with more to come) that help artists create and share fantastic images with the eventual intention of creating a new kind of market place to encourage commercial licensing of their CC licensed work through our new CC+ protocol. Aviary supports both our Attribution and Attribution-NonCommercial license.

One other feature that is unprecedented about Aviary is the ability to load other creator’s work directly into a new work, thus allowing for radically efficient in-platform remixing of content. Just think of what could happen if YouTube offered in-browser remix functionality for other people’s videos.

Sign up for an account today and start tinkering, or browse some of the amazing works already populating the community.

After the success of July’s CC Salon NYC, we’re even more excited about inviting you to September’s!

The Open Planning Project has once again generously allowed us to use their loft space in the West Village for the salon and a reception afterward.

September’s Salon will feature presentations from Rachel Sterne from GroundReport.com, Michael Galpert from A.viary.com, and a special screening / premier of two new shorts from the Meerkat Arts Media Collective.

Here are the details:

Tuesday, September 30th, from 7-10pm
The Open Planing Project
349 W. 12th St., 1st Floor

We’ll also have free (as in beer) beer for the reception afterward. If you didn’t make it to July’s salon, don’t miss this one, and if you did, you’ll know to come early as space is limited.

Follow the event via Upcoming.org and RSVP via the Facebook event or e-mailing me – fred [at] creativecommons.org
