Nine Inch Nails' "The Slip" out under a Creative Commons license

Eric Steuer

More very exciting news from Nine Inch Nails: Just two months after the Creative Commons-licensed release of NIN’s Ghosts I-IV, the band has released another album, entitled The Slip, also under CC terms. NIN has this to say about The Slip, which, like its predecessor, is available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike license.

we encourage you to
remix it
share it with your friends,
post it on your blog,
play it on your podcast,
give it to strangers,
etc.

We’ll have more to say about this great news soon.

  1. Is it correct, that I can use NIN’ music e.g. in an open source game which I don’t sell, but make freely available?

  2. @cerberus:
As long as the music you’re using is released on an album released under Creative Commons, you don’t even need to ask permission. That’s what it’s all about.

  3. cerberus, it’s correct IF you also adhere to the share alike property in addition to it being non commercial and providing proper credit:

Share Alike. If you alter, transform, or build upon this work, you may distribute the resulting work only under the same or similar license to this one.

  4. Trent Reznor is really giving back to the long term fans! He really is cutting edge. Way to go!

  5. Really pleased to see NIN doing this. Shows that this is more than just a marketing stunt. Would have wished for Radiohead to do this, but I guess they´re too busy thinking about the environment (like everyone else these days), green touring etc. to think of the ecology of ideas and culture 🙂

  6. I was so happy to see that blurb on The Slip’s page. I had been trying to get in touch with Trent in order to gain formal permission from him to include it on a future blocSonic netBloc compilation. That blurb is all the formal permission I now need.

I don’t think people have begun to realize how much of a watershed moment NIN’s CC licensing is. This is the first MAINSTREAM artist to embrace CC licensing. I’m quite sure it won’t be the last.

  7. I should clarify… I meant to say that I was trying to contact Trent to gain permission to include a Ghosts track on a future blocSoninc netBloc compilation.

  8. Reznor only released the album online because he knew it would make people aware of there upcoming tour and thus more people will buy tickets.
    🙂

  9. It is an interesting and exciting path Trent has decided to walk with CC. It’s a perfect example of technology and opportunity flowing together in perfect timing.
I am not sure if any other artist but Trent could have made this step. Trent’s fans appreciate this more than he could imagine. OK, I think he knows how much ;]

  10. If you like NIN you may be interested in the album I just finished last month. It is also available free. Licenced with the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Licence
This licence lets you use this music for commercial products or make remixes or other derivative works, so long as you give credit to the original artists.

Politics Apocalypse is political and subversive post-industrial rock with an interesting mix of classical instruments, guitars, electronic beats, and a small dash of aussie hip-hop. You can download the whole 11 track album at no cost at our website.

We are also doing a name your own price CD (starting at cost price).
I don’t mean to spam but I am trying to get the word out to those who may be interested. BTW I love The Slip, great album.
