Let’s build, protect, and grow the commons together!

Creative Commons is a global nonprofit dedicated to helping people share knowledge, creativity, and data openly and equitably. From practical training to policy advocacy and community building, there are many ways to engage with CC and contribute to a thriving digital commons.

Whether you’re an individual creator, educator, researcher, policymaker, or represent an institution, you can find meaningful ways to participate.

Training and Support for the Commons

Creative Commons training empowers creators, librarians, educators, researchers, and institutions to share knowledge openly and confidently. Our programs provide practical skills, legal frameworks, and real-world tools to use CC licenses effectively and participate meaningfully in the open movement—across sectors and experience levels.

As artificial intelligence rapidly reshapes how knowledge is created and shared, a strong foundation in open licensing and the commons is more important than ever. Our trainings include up-to-date considerations on AI and its impacts on openness, sharing, and equity. Learn more

Policy and Advocacy to Advance Access to Knowledge

The landscape of knowledge sharing is undergoing seismic change. Artificial intelligence, platform consolidation, and increasing enclosure of information threaten the foundations of an open, equitable web.

For years, the internet thrived as a reciprocal commons—powered by CC licenses, legal tools, and open practices that enabled sharing, remixing, and collaboration. Today, that reciprocity is under strain. Without intervention, the web risks becoming extractive: concentrating value, restricting access, and sidelining the public interest.

To protect the commons, tools alone are not enough. CC works to shape the rules, norms, and policies that determine how knowledge flows in a rapidly changing world. Learn more

Community as the Heart of Creative Commons

Centering community is one of CC’s three strategic priorities. For over two decades, we’ve worked with experts and advocates worldwide to advance open education, culture, and science in the public interest.

The Creative Commons Global Community includes individuals from more than 73 countries.
